Figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it.

Feeling like you’re in a rut or not moving fast enough toward your goals?

If you’ve found your way here to my website, then you've probably been looking for a change. As Henry Ford famously said, “If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always got.”

One of the things I tell myself and my clients on a regular basis is to figure out what you want and learn how to ask for it. Let me break that down:

  • Figure out what you want. This means reflecting on what’s important to you, trying things, letting go of perfection, and expecting to fail so you can learn from it. If that’s too general and you need some concrete steps, then here are three to get you started:

    • Step 1: What gives you energy? Do more of that.

    • Step 2: What completely drains you? Do less of that.

    • Step 3: What mistakes have you made? Think about what you’ve learned, or how those mistakes have served you.

  • Learn how to ask for it. This involves gaining the knowledge and skills to go after what you want. A big part of this is also having the humility to admit what you don’t know, the confidence to ask for help, and the discipline to persevere through challenges that will inevitably arise.
